Salix purpurea 'Packing Twine' - Thin Stem Arctic Willow
- hardy deciduous shrub with prolific slender rods
- purple young stems and narrow blue-green leaves make this also known as Purple willow or Blue willow
- inconspicuous light green blooms in early spring with the leaves
- this willow species is bitter and unpalatable to deer, livestock, and rabbits
- a prolific mass of particularly slender and flexible rods make this cultivar exceptional for all types of basket weaving
- long thin stems with very few branchlets are perfect for fine basket work
- this vigorous female cultivar is a dense grower, so would also make a great hedge against deer
- rods dry to a green or light brown color with a hint of pink blush
- established plants can produce 6-8’ rods every year when coppiced
- fantastic for creating living fedges or other small structures
- great for basket weaving and other dried crafts
- good for sunny areas with regularly moist well-drained soils
- grows to 4-16 feet high by 6-8 feet wide
