- purple young stems and narrow blue-green leaves make this also known as Purple willow or Blue willow
- inconspicuous light green blooms in early spring with the leaves
- stems start off brown then turn green; winter buds are yellow orange
- this willow species is bitter and unpalatable to deer, livestock, and rabbits
- this exceptionally vigorous male cultivar was originally developed for biofuel production
- grows a good 20-30% more biomass than other purpurea cultivars
- also useful as a windbreak, deer protection screen, and for larger living sculptures that are deer resistant!
- established plants can produce >10’ rods every year when coppiced
- fantastic for creating living fedges or other small structures
- great for basket weaving and other dried crafts
- good for sunny areas with regularly moist well-drained soils
