Salix purpurea '#187' - Sculptor’s Arctic Willow
- hardy deciduous shrub with a tall and narrow habit
- purple young stems and narrow blue-green leaves make this also known as Purple willow or Blue willow
- inconspicuous light green blooms in early spring with the leaves
- long, thin, and straight green rods are particularly excellent for training into a living fedge
- this willow species is bitter and unpalatable to deer, livestock, and rabbits
- good for sunny areas with regularly moist well-drained soils
- this vigorous male cultivar was originally developed for biofuel production
- established plants can produce 8-10’ rods every year when coppiced
- fantastic for creating living fedges or other small structures
- great for basket weaving and other dried crafts
- grows to 4-16 feet high by 6-8 feet wide
- grows in zones 3-8
