- aka: S.koriyanagi is often mislabeled as S.gilgiana, so these names may be interchangeable

- deciduous shrub with very early spring catkins

- red-purple tipped catkins can appear as early as January

- ornamental catkins are often held in opposite pairs

- upright and fast growing

- delicate, narrow gray-green leaves tend to grow in pairs or whorls

- good for sunny areas with regularly moist well-drained soils
