Rubus occidentalis 'Jewel’ - Black Raspberry


- multi-stemmed, prickly, thicket-forming deciduous shrub with edible fruits
- showy white single flowers in spring
- produces superbly flavorful black raspberries suitable for fresh eating, preserves, and baked goods
- large, sweet & flavorful, excellent quality fruit in early summer
- fruits on second year (floricane) stems only, but its single crop is larger than everbearing (primocane + floricane fruiting) crops are
- arching canes turn purplish red in winter
- this raspberry species is native to eastern North America
- this cultivar is a cross between Bristol and Dundee, developed at Cornell University in 1954
- black raspberries are best kept separated from red, purple, or golden cultivars to avoid susceptible virus spread
- prune out fruited canes after bearing each year, to maintain plant and encourage new growth
- roots are perennial, but canes are biennial (fruiting in their second year)
- vigorous plants sucker freely, and stems may root where they touch ground
- best located in areas where spread can be easily maintained, or comfortably contained
- great in full sun to part shade
- generally 4-5 ft tall by 1-2 ft wide
- adaptable to many soils, except ones that stay overwet
- grows in zones 3-8

- ships bareroot, wrapped in a soil-less medium to keep the roots damp
- ships in cool spring, fall, or winter seasons; not during summer
